Widy Grego and his passion for manioc

With his greying beard and dreadlocks, Widy Grego is a character with an atypical appearance and a reserved nature. His background is just as atypical and deserves a few words.

Born into a family of peasants, Widy did everything he could to break free from poverty and social shackles. He tried his hand at theatre, then worked for a while in the cassava industry, before joining a Rastafari community and living in autarky for 8 years.

In 2004, during a raid in Guadeloupe, he met the champion Dawa Sherpa. This meeting changed his life. He set off to run all over the world, specialising in long-distance nature events in extreme conditions. His achievements include finishing first in the Jungle Marathon in the Amazon rainforest in 2007 and the Tchimbé Raid in Martinique in 2011.

He takes advantage of his fame in the world of sport to spread a message of peace and carries out a number of humanitarian projects.

He recently returned to his home town of Sainte-Anne to work with cassava, his lifelong passion.

For Widy Grego, cassava is a family tradition. He defends a modern version of this widely eaten root vegetable.

in the West Indies. He has brought out the best in kassave, the traditional thin pancake made from manioc. And he goes even further, using manioc in a thousand ways: bread, semolina, but also friands, hamburgers, pizza, lasagne and tagliatelle... His creativity knows no bounds!

To taste his kassaves and other creations, come along to the Nèg Mawon roundabout at the entrance to Sainte-Anne on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9.30am to 2pm. Kassaves with cheese, giraumon-pesto, guava... Sweet or savoury, there's something for everyone. I particularly recommend you try the coconut kassave - it's absolutely divine!
